Mechanisms of increasing predation by planktivorous fish with rising temperature may explain the temperature–body size relationships in zooplankton

چکیده
The temperature–size rule (TSR) has been consistently observed in numerous studies, showing that ectotherms reared at higher temperatures experience accelerated growth during the juvenile stage and ultimately reach smaller sizes younger ages maturity. One explanation for this response is it occurs when effect of temperature on mortality, including predation, outweighs its food intake metabolism. While several studies have found latter close to expected result based Q 10 = 2 assumption, confirmation hypothesis requires evidence mortality exceeds threshold. To test hypothesis, we conducted experiments with two fish species: rudd Malabar danio. We examined capture rate, which serves as a proxy well standard metabolic rate (SMR) parameters characterising mobility their planktonic prey ( Daphnia ) different temperatures. results strongly supported our increased significantly more than especially This substantial cannot be attributed solely thermal sensitivity SMR, SMR was only around 2. most likely seems much pronounced increase fish’s resulting reaction field volume compared elevated leads an improved attack by fish, prediction made assumption. mechanism may explain not TSR pattern zooplankton, but also reduced mean body size density population community levels temperatures, hypothetically other predator–prey interfaces.

The Impact of Fish Predation and Cyanobacteria on Zooplankton Size Structure in 96 Subtropical Lakes
Zooplankton are relatively small in size in the subtropical regions. This characteristic has been attributed to intense predation pressure, high nutrient loading and cyanobacterial biomass. To provide further information on the effect of predation and cyanobacteria on zooplankton size structure, we analyzed data from 96 shallow aquaculture lakes along the Yangtze River. Contrary to former studi...

Relations between planktivorous fish and zooplankton in two very shallow lakes of the Pampa Plain
It is widely accepted that predation plays a critical role in determining zooplankton community structure in ponds and lakes. The relationship between fish planktivory and zooplankton species composition has been discussed since the early work of HRBACEK et al. (1961) and BROOKS & DODSON (1965). Size-selective predation by fish may produce changes in zooplankton community structure. Phenomena f...
متن کاملA behavioral cascade: Top-predator induced behavioral shifts in planktivorous fish and zooplankton
It is well known that the effects of direct (lethal) predator-prey interactions propagate through food webs (the trophic cascade). However, in the present study we show for the first time that, parallel to the trophic cascade, there exists a ‘‘behavioral cascade’’ in the sense that behavioral responses, induced by the nonlethal presence of a top predator, are transmitted down the food chain ove...
